First Experiment with Making Commercials

Wed. night we had class and watched a very cool step-by-step video on the technique and process involved in making student videos.

The next day was Earth Day. I was to have 3 Kindergarten classes come into my room for 30 minutes each to learn about ways to reduce/conserve paper, water and energy. My original lesson design plan had been for the classes to make posters explaining ways to use less water, paper and energy.

Instead --- WE MADE commercials. They were great! I brainstormed ideas with them first. Then we wrote out the audio and drew the storyboard on the Promethean board. Next we decided how many people would be in each scene and assigned parts. Lastly, we rehearsed each scene and I taped. If we forgot which scene came next or who was in it, our Kindergarten "co-director" looked at the Storyboard up on the Promethean board and reminded us.

We only had 30 min. and they did an amazing job for only having that small amount of time! I held the camera .. because it was, after all, Kindergarten students.

I used Movie Maker to edit and put the scenes together. I need to experiment with Movie Maker to learn how to add title and credits pages and do transitions.

For my first attempt, it was hugely engaging and successful. Videos will be posted on the K webpage and played on the morning News Show. What a fun way to spread the word!

I'll attach our commercials below.

  1. These are ABSOLUTELY precious. What a great way to start my day!!!!

What are your thoughts on the importance of showing students how to be video designers? Would they have done as well without teaching them to be designers? Priscilla
