A new student and refugee from Haiti, rap brought him into the limelight. As a review for the 5th grade Science SOL, his 5th grade teacher broke the class into pairs. Each pair was assigned a topic from the year. Students created poems, songs or raps explaining what was important about that topic.
Even though it was not my own activity, it's certainly an idea I'll use in a future "design." What a great way to share the year's topics. The teacher told me that certain groups were asked to perform their rap for the principal. :) My 5th grade ELL student (in video below) was one of those asked to perform.
I wanted to hear it so he rapped about Matter for my ELL class (which was so good I taped it.) Then we asked him to rap it in French. Then the rest of the group - from Peurto Rico, Turkey and India rapped it in their own languages. The group had a lot of fun hearing this content-area vocabulary translated into French, Spanish, Turkish and Malayalam.
